“Today was amazing. The waves were on fire and everyone was smiling. There’s not really much more you can ask for, and of course it was for a great cause!” Dylan Goodale was one of nine pros who stepped up to surf for SurfAid’s Mother and Child Health programs. Dylan and all the competitors were rewarded with a hurricane fueled swell that kept the crowd entertained with some of the most epic surfing ever seen in a SurfAid Cup Malibu event.

In partnership with Malibu Surfing Association (MSA), nine teams competed and raised over $42,000 to ensure SurfAid partner communities around the world have access to clean water & sanitation, basic healthcare, and improved nutrition.

Foam Ballers Team Captain Zen Gesner and his teammates Jon Mone, Takuji & Rygi Masuda, and Tom Triggs swept the event, with an unprecedented win in all three categories! For the second year in a row, the Foam Ballers took home the prestigious Fundraising Cup after raising $16,290 for SurfAid. “It is such an honor to contribute whatever we can for SurfAid. To think that our fundraising will help to save lives brings me so much joy.”

The Foam Ballers were one of six teams who made it to the finals. Following their lead in second place were 99 High Tide, third, the Latigroms, fourth, MSA/Barefoot Dreams, fifth, Procore, and closing out the final heat in sixth place the #1 Surf Team in LA. Every team surfed incredibly well, but in the end, they were no match for the Foam Ballers who took home the Surfing Cup with a final score of 352.5.

“The Foam Ballers poured every ounce of our surfing talents and fundraising abilities into SurfAid this year and we surfed our heats like every wave was saving lives! This marks the 2nd year we’ve managed to be named the #1 fundraising team, and that is an incredible honor. The fact that this year we won the #1 Surfing Team for our work out in the water, is a nice bonus to an already beautiful day!” Zen captured the essence of a SurfAid Cup and the unbeatable combination of surf stoke paired with a chance to help others makes for an unforgettable day on the beach.

The final award of the day went to SurfAid newbie, 10-year-old Rygi Masuda, who was recognized with the SurfAid Stoke award for having the most fun while surfing to save lives. This was Rygi’s first surf contest and he had some early reservations about competing, but a recent trip to Indonesia motivated Rygi to help others. “Last July my family and I travelled to Indonesia. It was an incredible experience surfing in places like Uluwatu and Keramas. I decided to be a part of this contest because I heard that SurfAid helps people in need and I saw some people who could probably use some help. This was my first surfing contest I ever did, and it happened at a beach close to my home. Also, I was lucky to be on the winning team. Can’t wait for the next year!”

In addition to epic surf, event competitors were treated to an exclusive launch party hosted by Paradise Cove and Paradise Cove Beach Café. 805 Beer flowed throughout the evening and was served alongside the restaurant’s famous paella while guests mingled outside on the shores of one of Malibu’s most beautiful beaches. The VIP treatment continued at the competition with lunch provided by Wahoo’s Fish Taco’s, Asian Box Street Food, and Humm Kombucha.

Additional support provided by Sticky Bumps Wax & Accessories, Odi Schlossberg Surf Art, and The Local. All the event partners support helps to increase the amount of funds directed back to SurfAid programs. Funds raised through the SurfAid Cup directly translate to transformational change in our communities. SurfAid’s hand up – not a hand out philosophy is built to ensure lasting sustainability and opportunities like the SurfAid Cup show how surfers can work together to make a real difference for those in need.

Congratulations to all the competitors of the 2019 SurfAid Cup Malibu for an epic weekend of surfing and saving lives.
